Specifications

I have found a review of the AD-F990. It's from a long-defunct underground mag called The Flat Response. Part of a subjective group review including the Yamaha KD-320, Sony WM-D6C, B&O 9000 and Nak Dragon. I haven't scanned it yet but let me know if you want to see it and I'll do it. AIWA AD-F990 Audiophile Cassette Deck - 3-Heads, Dual Capstan. Condition is Used. US Model unit, 120VAC power. This deck was called the Dragon Slayer and Nakamichi Killer. Non-Smoking environment. Dolby B/C/HX-Pro. Microprocessor-controlled tape transport. Automatic tape bias/EQ. Tape type sensing. Automatic head demagnetization. I would consider myself an audiophile and also have some experience in professional recording. You can take that for whatever it is worth. For the record I have an Onkyo TA-2056 and an Aiwa AD-F990. Both are 3-head and date from 1985 or 1986 or so. I bought the Onkyo at dealer cost and the Aiwa.

Aiwa Ad F990 Review Guide

Dolby C-type used in the AD-F910 provides 20 dB of noise reduction above about 1,000 Hz, fully doubling the amount given by B-type. The Dolby HX PRO system provides precise bias control during recording to reduce distortion and improve linearity in the high-frequency range, the result is recorded sound that is highly faithful to the original. The 19kHz multiplex pilot slgnal present in FM stereo broadcasts can cause false triggering of the noise reduction system. The switchable MPX filter of the AD-F910 filters out the pilot signal, and assuring proper Dolby processing of FM stereo programs.

For undisturbed listening a jack connector for a pair of stereo headphones is supplied. Connection to other audio components for plaback can be achieved by a RCA cable and recording from a source by a RCA cable. All main transport commands can be issued remotely with a wireless remote control.
